Visa

 General Information

All foreign travelers planning short stay (30 days) holiday visit, a short business trip or to transit through need to apply and obtain Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to arrival in Sri Lanka.

Please visit   http://www.eta.gov.lk to apply for visa.

 

Visitors who already possess a valid Sri Lankan passport or valid residence permit in Sri Lanka do not need a visa to enter Sri Lanka.


Nationals from Republic of Singapore & Maldives who visit Sri Lanka for a short visit up to 30 days are exempt from ETA.

 

ETA can be obtained by the following methods

$11.         Online ETA System:  

Submit visa application through the ETA system at www.eta.gov.lk and pay visa fee by visa, master or American Express cards  credit/debit cards ).  Applicant must input personal details including e-mail address.  Acknowledgement will be received within 24 hours and Confirmation (ETA number) will be received within 03 working days.  It will be valid for 30 days only.

You will need to obtain a printout and provide the ETA number of the visa at the Immigration Counter of the Airport during the immigration check.

If ETA application is submitted by a third party, the payments are to be made through the same procedure i.e ETA websitehttp://www.eta.gov.lk and obtain acknowledgement of ETA application. Any payments made to other websites or agencies are not valid to process a valid ETA.  Therefore, always endure that the payments made by accessing Sri Lanka ETA website and avoid making repayment at the port of entry to Sri Lanka.

$12.         At the Embassy: 

Those who are not in a position to apply online or wish to obtain longer term visa may visit the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels and submit application.

(This Mission can issue visa for a maximum period of 90 days for tourist visa & business visa)

$13.         Port of Entry in Sri Lanka: 

For last minute travelers who need to visit Sri Lanka without prior ETA approval, a limited facility to obtain ETA is available at the Airport.  Additional fee will apply and expect significant delay for processing. This facility is only available to those possessing European, US, Australian and Canadian Passports.

Requirements for Tourist/Business Visa if applying through  the Embassy

 

$1               i.     Duly completed visa application form with signature. Please clearly write applicant's name, address and telephone number

$1              ii.     Two recent passport size photos

$1          iii.     Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page. The Passport should be valid for six months from the date of departure from Sri Lanka after the intended visit

$1             iv.     Apart from Belgian passport holders other should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

$1              v.     Copy of air ticket or cruise-ship reservation

$1             vi.     For business visa proof concerning the purpose of the visit

 

Important:

For Business Visa, a copy of the Letter of Invitation by the Sri Lankan company/organization to the applicant  and  a formal letter from the company/ organization in Belgium or Luxembourg requesting for a visa to the person concerned with a brief introduction about the company, nature of business and details of the contact person/company in Sri Lanka should be attached as proof when applying business visa.

Long stay visa

Persons proceeding to Sri Lanka for Educational assignments/academic research, employment, voluntary work in social service organizations and non-governmental organizations, officers designated to Diplomatic  Missions in Sri Lanka and other International Organizations  or to join their spouses in Sri Lanka must apply for visa at the Embassy. ETA Travel Authorization is not permitted.

Diplomatic and  Official Visits

Foreign nationals intending to visit Sri Lanka for Diplomatic or Official purposes should forward the following documents to this Embassy to obtain prior approval from Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo. 

$1                i.         Note verbale issued by their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Diplomatic Mission

$1               ii.         Dully filled application

$1              iii.         Two recent passport size photos

$1              iv.         Valid Passport  (for more than 6 months). EU Officials should submit the EU Laissez-passer

$1               v.         Apart from Belgian passport holders others should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium

$1             vi.         Copy of air ticket or cruise-ship reservation

Diplomatic and Official passport holders should not apply for tourist/business ETA for their official visits or to engage in any official assignment in Sri Lanka.

Diplomatic and Official passport holders should follow the normal ETA application procedure for their personal visits.

Work/Residence Visa

Visa for this purpose will be issued only by the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Business organizations/company or NGO in Sri Lanka (Sri Lankan counterpart) should submit application for work/ resident visa on behalf of the applicant directly to Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.  The Department will then authorize this Embassy to issue entry visa to the applicant.

On receipt of the approval from Department of Immigration and Emigration, the Embassy could issue entry visa once the applicant submits the documents mentions under.

Once the applicant arrives in Sri Lanka on an entry visa issued by the Embassy, with the approval of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, persons can obtain residence visa/work permit.

 

Requirements for entry visa

  • $1               i.         Duly completed visa application - form B / application for entry visa
  • $1              ii.         Two identity photos per person
  • $1             iii.         Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page
  • $1             iv.         Clearance letter from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in the case of applicants for business visit. A Note Verbale from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the respective country in the case of diplomats.
  • $1              v.         Apart from Belgian passport holders others should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium
  • $1             vi.         Copy of air ticket
  • $1           vii.         Relevant fee

 

Visa for Media Personnel, Journalists, Photographers & Film Crews

To issue visa under this category, applications should be made at least 2 weeks in advance.

Request letter addressed to the Embassy from the relevant media institution, including a copy of the Curriculum Vitae of the journalist, description of the nature of the assignment to be carried out in Sri Lanka, details of any appointments sought from Government officials, description of the media equipment to be taken to Sri Lanka and a copy of the passport.  

For film crews; details of the planned synopsis of the film, duration, locations, the names and passport details of the media personnel visiting Sri Lanka should be annexed with the request letter.  And it is mandatory for those filming in Sri Lanka to sign the Condition for Filming Agreement.

All media personnel are required to hold a carnet for the media equipment taken into the country.  The carnet is needed to be submitted to the authorities in Sri Lanka to take the media equipment in to Sri Lanka.

For filming in wildlife-protected areas, prior approval from the Department of Wildlife Conservation should be obtained.  Link for filming permit:   file:///C:/Users/User/Downloads/Filming.pdf

On the receipt of the approval from the Sri Lankan authorities, the Embassy will issue visa once the applicant submits the following documents;

  • $1               i.         Duly completed visa application for each member
  • $1              ii.         Two identity photos per person
  • $1             iii.         Valid Passport with at least one unused visa page
  • $1             iv.         Dully completed agreement & Clearance from the Sri Lankan authorities
  • $1              v.         Apart from Belgian passport holders others should produce a valid Residence permit in Belgium
  • $1             vi.         Equipment list and carnet
  • $1           vii.         Copy of air ticket
  • $1          viii.         Relevant fee
